International Workshop "Shapes and Dynamics of Atomic Nuclei: Contemporary Aspects" (SDANCA-17), 5-7 October 2017, Sofia, Bulgaria

This volume contains articles based on the presentations given at the International Workshop "Shapes and Dynamics of Atomic Nuclei: Contemporary Aspects" (SDANCA-17) held in the Hotel of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) in Sofia from 5-th to 7-th of October 2017. The Workshop was organized by the research group on "Models of complex deformed nuclei" in the Institute of Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy (INRNE) in BAS with the financial support of the Bulgarian National Science Fund under contract No. DFNI-E02/6. It appears as the second issue of the workshop SDANCA-15, held in the same place in October 2015.

The aim of the Workshop was to provide an opportunity for highly motivated researchers in the field of nuclear shape dynamics and related phenomena to discuss advanced ideas, open problems and possible future directions for developments in the subject. The idea was to gather colleagues with a common interest and various expert skills who wish to emphasize different contemporary aspects of the theoretical or experimental approaches to the shape dynamics problem in atomic nuclei and other physical systems as well.

The SDANCA-17 Workshop covered the following main topics:
- Collective and microscopic models for nuclear deformations;
- Shapes and symmetries - geometric and algebraic aspects;
- Coexisting shapes and shape-phase transition phenomena;
- Exotic shapes;
- Shapes and dynamics at the limits of stability;
- New data on nuclear deformations and current experimental techniques;
- Interdisciplinary aspects: links to shape phenomena in other physical systems.

The Workshop was attended by 43 registered participants from 12 countries: France, Greece, India, Israel, Japan, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States and Bulgaria. Additionally more than 10 not-registered colleagues from INRNE and University of Sofia were also interested and have attended the presentations. The scientific program contained in total 29 talks and five 30 minutes discussions lead by conveners. Similarly to SDANCA-15 the discussions appeared to be really inspiring with many additional questions being raised and disputed. The talks and the discussions covered issues of microscopic and collective approaches and new experimental results as well, including: density functional theory, many-body/self-consistent theories, shell-model-based and ab-initio developments, group-theoretical (algebraic) models exploring different kinds of symmetries (unitary, symplectic, "partial-dynamical", "proxy", etc.) associated with shape-deformations and transitions, shell effects, pairing and multipole interactions, geometric models treating softness of the shape and effects of the complex deformations, isomeric states, systematic behavior of low-lying states, new experimental data etc.

The SDANCA-17 Workshop contribution papers are published in the Bulgarian Journal of Physics, vol. 44, number 4 (2017), after passing a full refereeing procedure. The files of the SDANCA-17 presentations (in pdf or ppt format) provided by some speakers, can be downloaded from the PROGRAMME page of the present site (click "SLIDES" after the title).

Second Announcement (download):

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Organizing Committee of SDANCA-17, I would like to thank all of you for accepting to attend the Workshop. You can see the list of participants and announced talks on our web page: http://ntl.inrne.bas.bg/events/sdanca17/listp.php. Here we would like to announce the following details:

Travel schedules: For hotel reservation reason as well as to arrange the Workshop program we need information about your exact arrival and departure times. Dinner will be provided in the BAS restaurant for participants arriving on 4-th of October. We believe that reaching the BAS hotel from Sofia airport is convenient. Still in case of special circumstances, late flights etc., you may let us know and we can arrange to help or advise you how to proceed.

Contributions submission: The Workshop contribution manuscripts will be published in the Bulgarian Journal of Physics (BJP) after a peer review. You can download the BJP LaTeX style package from the journal web page http://www.bjp-bg.com/authors together with the instructions for authors. Note that it differs from the abstracts template. Please consider the following details:

  • To meet the aim of 2017 publication we require that all manuscripts are submitted in a term starting by now and not later than 22-nd of October. The review of each manuscript will be proceeded immediately after its receiving.
  • The manuscripts should not exceed 10 pages in the BJP style.
  • Please send the contribution files to Nikolay.Minkov@theo.physik.uni-giessen.de since the other address nminkov@inrne.bas.bg has some disc limitations. We need the LaTeX source and EPS/PDF/PNG figure files. Using ZIP or RAR archives is possible.
  • We shall inform you about the program of talks as soon as ready.

    With kind regards,

    Nikolay Minkov
    Chair of the SDANCA-17 Organizing Committee

    First Announcement (download):

    Description: The International Workshop "Shapes and Dynamics of Atomic Nuclei: Contemporary Aspects" (SDANCA-17) will be held in the Hotel of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) in Sofia, Bulgaria between the 4-th (arrival day) and 8-th (departure day) of October 2017. The Workshop is organized by the research group on "Models of Complex Deformed Nuclei" in the Institute of Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy (INRNE) in BAS with the financial support of the Bulgarian National Science Fund under contract No. DFNI-E02/6. It appears as the second issue of the workshop SDANCA-15, held in the same place in October 2015.

    Aim: The aim of the Workshop is to provide an opportunity for highly motivated researchers in the field of nuclear shape dynamics and related phenomena to discuss advanced ideas, open problems and possible future directions for developments in the subject. The idea is to gather colleagues with a common interest and various expert skills who may wish to emphasize different contemporary aspects on the theoretical or experimental approaches to the shape dynamics problem in atomic nuclei and other physical systems as well. We believe this meeting can intensify already established scientific communications and inspire further long-term joint activity on the topic.

    Main topics:

  • Collective and microscopic models for nuclear deformations;
  • Shapes and symmetries - geometric and algebraic aspects;
  • Coexisting shapes and shape-phase transition phenomena;
  • Exotic shapes;
  • Shapes and dynamics at the limits of stability;
  • New data on nuclear deformations and current experimental techniques;
  • Interdisciplinary aspects: links to shape phenomena in other physical systems.

We plan to schedule 25 - 30 min standard talks as well as possibly shorter 15 min reports depending on the number of participants. The sessions will be organized by topics and the session convenors will have the possibility to conduct a common discussion at the end of each session. A final discussion session in a possible round-table format is considered for the last afternoon providing an opportunity to outline perspectives for further developments and joint activity.
