International Workshop "Shapes and Dynamics of Atomic Nuclei: Contemporary Aspects" (SDANCA-21), 16-18 September 2021, Sofia, Bulgaria

The International Workshop "Shapes and Dynamics of Atomic Nuclei: Contemporary Aspects" (SDANCA-21) was held in Sofia Tech Park, Sofia, Bulgaria from the 16-th to the 18-th of September 2021. The Workshop was organized by researchers from the Institute of Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy (INRNE) in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) with the financial support of the Bulgarian National Science Fund under contracts No. KP-06-N48/1, KP-06-N28/6 and KP-06-RILA/6. It appeared as the fourth issue of the workshop SDANCA-15, SDANCA-17 and SDANCA-19 held in Sofia in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

The aim of the Workshop was to gather researchers in the field of nuclear shape dynamics and related areas providing a possibility to discuss advanced ideas, actual problems and future developments in the subject. The meeting outlined several directions of common interest and inspired new ideas in various contemporary aspects of the theoretical and experimental approaches to the shape-dynamics problem in the nucleus and other physical systems. We believe that it contributed to the strengthening of the existing collaborations and inspired new activities on the topic.

The SDANCA-21 Workshop covered the following main topics:
- Collective and microscopic theories for nuclear deformations;
- Shapes and symmetries - geometric and algebraic aspects;
- Shape coexistence and shape-phase transition phenomena;
- Complex shapes, isomers and cluster phenomena;
- Shapes and dynamics at the limits of stability;
- New data on nuclear deformations and current experimental techniques;
- Interdisciplinary aspects: links to shape phenomena in other physical systems.

The Workshop was attended by 68 registered participants (30 onsite and 38 online) from 20 countries: Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Japan, Morrocco, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Switzerland(CERN), Turkey, United Kingdom, USA and Bulgaria. The scientific program contained 54 talks in total (23 onsite and 31 online). Due to the large number of talks it was not possible to share time for special discussion sessions but nevertheless a variety of inspiring questions were raised and discussed between the talks and in the ends of the sessions. The talks covered issues of microscopic and collective approaches and new experimental results as well, including: density and covariant-density functional theory, many-body/self-consistent theories, non-core shell and ab-initio developments, group-theoretical (algebraic) models exploring different kinds of symmetries (unitary, symplectic, "proxy", "pseudo", "partial dynamical", etc.) associated with the most actual effects of shape coexistence, shape-phase transitions, shell effects, pairing and multipole interactions, geometric models treating rigidity and softness, triaxiality and chirality, pear-shape and clustering effects, nuclear masses and moments, high-K and "clock" isomers, properties at different mass regions (A=130, 180; N=90, 116-122; N~Z, superheavy, etc.). Current developments of experimental techniques, facilities and collaborations, such as ELI-NP, TITAN, FRS-IC, COLLAPS/ISOLDE, INGA and others, were presented together with new data from lifetimes, moments and mass measurements and analysis. Latest achievements in interdisciplinary subjects such as RHIC/CGP, neutron stars, pionic helium, lasers and nuclear clock elaboration were discussed in the aspects of their relation to atomic nuclei. A commemorative discussion devoted to the late Prof. David Rowe was held giving respect to his pioneering works in the group-theoretical approach and their impact on the new generations of researchers in the field. One of the main conclusions reached by the meeting is that gaining a "simplicity from the complexity" may be not only a matter of chance but a result of a thorough study of the different aspects in the manifestation of phenomena allowing one to identify the regularities that govern them.

The SDANCA-21 Workshop contribution papers will be published in the Bulgarian Journal of Physics, after passing a refereeing procedure.

The Organizing Committee of SDANCA-21 cordially thanks all participants and strongly hopes that all we meet again.

First Announcement (download pdf):

Description: The Fourth International Workshop "Shapes and Dynamics of Atomic Nuclei: Contemporary Aspects" (SDANCA-21) will be held in Sofia, Bulgaria between the 15-th (arrival day) and 19-th (departure day) of September 2021. The Workshop is organized by researchers from the Institute of Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy (INRNE) in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) with the financial support of the Bulgarian National Science Fund under contracts No. KP-06-N48/1, No. KP-06-N28/6 and KP-06-RILA/6. It appears as the fourth issue of the Workshop under the names SDANCA-15, SDANCA-17 and SDANCA-19 held in the same place in 2015, 2017 and 2019. This time the Workshop will be held in a hybrid form combining talks of on-site and on-line participants.

Aim: The aim of the Workshop is to gather researchers in the field of nuclear shape dynamics and related areas providing a possibility to discuss advanced ideas, actual problems and future developments in the subject. It is expected to outline directions of common interest and inspire new ideas in various contemporary aspects of the theoretical and experimental approaches to the shape-dynamics problem in the nucleus and other physical systems. We believe this meeting can strengthen the existing collaborations and inspire new activities on the topic.

Main topics:

  • Collective and microscopic theories of nuclear deformation;
  • Shapes and symmetries - geometric and algebraic aspects;
  • Shape coexistence and shape-phase transition phenomena;
  • Complex shapes, isomers and cluster phenomena;
  • Shapes and dynamics at the limits of stability;
  • New data on nuclear deformations and current experimental techniques;
  • Interdisciplinary aspects: links to shape phenomena in other physical systems.
  • Program: The program will start in the morning of 16-th of September (Thursday) and will end in the evening of 18-th of September (Saturday) 2021. Depending on the number of participants we plan to schedule 20+5 min talks for onsite participants and 15+5 min talks for online participants. The sessions will be organized by topics and the session convenors will have the possibility to conduct a common discussion at the end of each session. A final discussion is considered in the end, providing an opportunity to outline perspectives for further developments.

    Publication: We plan to publish SDANCA21 contribution articles. The publisher will be decided in due time after the format of the contributions and the topics is shaped out.

    Conference venue: The Workshop will be held in the Venue Hall "Incubator" of Sofia Tech Park, located at Tzarigrad Road 111, Sofia.

    Accommodation: The participants will be accommodated in the Hotel of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) in Sofia, Shipchenski prohod Str. 50. (the venue of the previous SDANCA workshops). The hotel is situated at 10 mins walking distance from Pliska place (former Hotel Pliska). The BAS hotel web site is http://www.domnaucheniya.com/contacts/ (in Bulgarian only). From there the Sofia Tech Park (conference venue) is easily reached through Pliska by bus lines 76, 204, 213, 306 and 604, about 5 mins, to St. Ana Hospital (Airport direction).
